A Cup of Water Per Day

“And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.” Matthew 10:42

The Bible often uses water to symbolize faith, salvation, and provision. Water is essential to our physical living just as Jesus is essential to our spiritual living!

It is such a common occurrence for any of us living in our blessed homes to wake up and reach for a cup of water, which is readily available for us anytime we desire. In the Gospel of John Chapter 4, we have the story of the Samaritan Woman who walked for miles every day to get to Jacob’s well to draw water during the heat or cold to sustain her. One day she met the Lord Jesus at that well, and Jesus asked her for a cup of water because He was physically thirsty. She said to Him, “You don’t have anything to draw water with from this well,” and He answered her and said, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” John 4:10

You may ask, are there still people in our lifetime today like the Samaritan Woman who walk for miles to draw water from a well for their daily survival? Yes, absolutely. It is still a very common occurrence today for many women and children from the Maasai tribe, a semi-nomadic ethnic group primarily located in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, to walk for miles to attain just a few gallons of water to survive and help their families for a whole week. Many women will spend their lifetime struggling under the weight of attaining the basic things of life just to survive one more day, and so that their babies don’t face death due to malnourishment and lack of water. However, our ministry partners, the African Transformational Leadership under the leadership of Dr. Robert Kamau, are answering the call and have been digging water wells as close as possible to the tents and mud homes where the Maasai people live. Now the Maasai women and children who come to these wells to draw water have come to rejoice, because a cup of water is now available near them and they don’t have to walk for miles to get water for themselves and their livestock. They can come and draw anytime to drink, to save their lives and the lives of their children and livestock.

Every time a well is dug near the dwelling places of these tribes, thousands of lives are changed. Not only do they receive physical water — every time they come to draw water, they hear the Gospel from a minister attending to the well, and many come to know Christ as Savior and Lord.

Just for a cup of water, a life is changed forever.

With tears in her eyes, Namelo, a young mother of several children, testified and gave praises to Jesus for the well which makes water available for her and her children. It may seem such a basic thing to us to give our child a cup of water; however, it was such an impossibility for Namelo to give her child the needed cup of water without walking miles to get it. Thank God for the African Transformational Leadership, which is offering the pathway to physical and spiritual life for the Maasai people.
